(1)已经(by or before now or a particular or suggested time in the past) [尤与perf连用]：He has～paid/gone/seen the film.他已经付完款了/走了/看过那部片子了。He had～paid/gone/seen the film when I phoned.我打电话时他已付完款了/走了/看过那部片子了。She was～laying the table.她已经在摆餐桌了。It is～ripe/finished/over.这已经熟了/完成了/结束了。She was～up/dressed/in the room when I arrived.我到时她已经起来了/穿好衣服了/在房间里了。It is(was)only February but there are (were)～flowers in the garden.刚2月份花园里就已经开花了。

(2)已经(as soon or as early as this)(用于否定、疑问句)(表示惊讶)：Have you finished lunch～? It's only 12 o'clock.你已经吃过午饭了?才12点呢。Is it～ripe/finished/over?这已经熟了/完成了/结束了吗?You're not going～，are you? 你不会这么早就要离开，是吗?

【说明】already 指过去时，从前一般用于复合时态(过去完成体，过去进行体等);不用于一般过去时;如用于一般过去时时，通常有一个表示“特定的或暗示的过去时间”的时间状语(见(1)中倒数第2例);否则不是标准英语。但现在在非正式的AmE中常用于一般过去时，如：I already heard it.(我当时已听到了。)yet，just也如此。

【辨异】 1)already 和 all ready 意思相差甚远。already 指时间，all ready是指“准备好了”这一状态。(“人人都准备好了”或“完全准备好了”之意。)试对比：The meal is already on the table.(饭菜已经摆在桌上了。)The meal is all ready on the table.(饭菜全上齐了。) 2)already 和yet 都常与完成体连用，表示行为的完成。如：He has already come.(他已来了。)也可用于一般现在时，表示因行为开始得比预期的早而惊讶，如：The soup's already cold.(汤已凉了。)但yet只用于否定句和疑问句，如：He hasn't come yet.(他还没来。)The soup's not cold yet.(汤还没凉。)而already则常用于肯定句(有时也用于否定句和疑问句，但表示惊讶(见(2) ))。still¹也可以用于一般现在时，表示因情况延续得比预期的长而惊讶，如：The soup's still hot.(汤还是热的。)
