【辨异】big与large和great 都可表示尺寸、范围、程度的大小。指具体事物的大小时，big最常用，口语色彩最浓，如：a big hole/field/man;large可与之互换，如：a large hole/field，但语体色彩较为正式，且通常不指人;great是一个语体色彩很正式的词，此时带有说话者的种种感情色彩(如崇敬、畏惧、生气等)，如：a great hole (一个大得不得了的洞)，great plains (辽阔的平原)。指程度、质量时，great最常用，可与抽象不可数名词连用，如：great beauty/surprise/mistakes (绝色/大吃一惊/极大的错误);big有时可用于这种含义，如：big mistakes (大错)，但具有口语色彩，且不可接抽象不可数名词;large不可用于表示程度等，亦不可接抽象不可数名词。指数量时，large与great意义相同，如：a large/great number/amount of (大量的)。
