筚门圭窦筚门圭窬/筚门蓬户bì mén guī dòua humble abode (/rust hut); a poor man’s house; be reduced to hovels
❍ 今自王叔之相也，政以贿成，而刑放于宠，官之师旅，不胜其富，吾能无～乎？(《左传·襄十年》) Now since Wang Shu became chief minister,the government has been carried on by means of bribes,and punish ments have been in the hands of his favourites. His officers have become enormously rich,and it is not to be wondered at if we are reduced to such hovels.
❍ 王叔之宰曰： “～之人，而皆陵其上，其难为上矣。”(《左传·襄十年》) Wang Shu’s steward said，“When people who live in hovels,with wicker doors fitted to holes in the wall,insult their superiors,it is hard to be a man of superior rank.” 筚门圭窦bì mén ɡuī dòu筚门：柴门；圭窦：在墙上凿的圭形门洞，上尖下方。形容家庭非常贫寒。grass hut a humble dwelling, great scholars coming from poor families |
