(2) 分别的，各异的(separate; distinct) [作attrib][接pl n]：put the things in three～boxes 把这些东西分别放在三个盒子里;sell sth in～colours 出售不同颜色的某物;I saw him with two～women. 我看见他分别同两个不同的女人在一起。D～people like～things. 各人有各人的喜好。〖同〗separate， distinct， individual;

【惯用法】 1) different用于第(1)义用在连系动词后时，若后面有名词(或wh关系词引导的名词从句)，在BrE中，用介词from或to(有人认为后者不妥，而倾向于用前者);在AmE中，则通常用than。若后面有that从句，在BrE中也用than(或from )，AmE 中尤如此，如：Europe was different from what I had expected/than I had expected.(欧洲与我想象的不同。) 但在正式语体中，还是用from较好。若用于第(4)义(“不平常的”)且为比较级时，当然后接than，如：He is more～than you are.(他比你更特别。) 2) different是原级，但含有比较级的意思，因此，作表语时其前可用no修饰，如：It is no different from what it was yesterday.(这与昨天没什么不同。) 在否定句和疑问句中，可用much修饰，如：It is not much different from what it was yesterday.(这与昨天差不多。)

【辨异】different与distinct和various都指事物有足够的差异，可明显看出不是同一类型。different指一个个体与另一个个体或多个个体之间特性(征)的不同;而distinct(不同的，有区别的)则指(也许相似的)事物之间有区别，如：two distinct accounts that coincide(两种互相巧合的不同记述)。various(不同的，各种各样的)指同一事物的不同种类，如：various types of seaweed(各种各样的海藻)。
