【惯用法】deny多用第(1)义; 用于第(3)义时，不可说：*deny to give sb any help，而应说：deny sb any help;这与refuse不同(试对比：refuse to give sb any help )。

【辨异】1) deny当“否认(是事实)”讲时，与contradict(反驳，否认(是真实的))同义，区别在于：deny 是说所否认的事情不是真的，而contradict则陈述一种反对意见，声明所否认的事情的对立面是真的，如：contradict a statement(反驳一陈述 —— 否认其真实性)。2) deny 当 “拒绝”讲时，与refuse²，decline 和reject 同义，都表示不接受。refuse(拒绝(接受，做某事，给予))是常用语，表示直接了当的、态度坚决的拒绝，如：refuse a bribe(拒受贿赂);decline(婉谢)，必须用语言，且口气较缓和客气，用于正式场合，如：decline an invitation(婉言谢绝一邀请)，如果说refuse an invitation(拒绝邀请)就很生硬和不礼貌了;deny则是拒绝(给予)的意思，无拒绝接受的含义，如：deny sb any help(拒绝给予某人任何帮助);reject(拒绝(接受))不必用语言，口气比refuse更明确、更肯定，如：reject a suitor(拒绝一求婚者)。
