【说明】defend...from...是“使……不受进攻”之意;defend...against...则是“试图挡住或击退进攻之意”。

【辨异】defend与guard， protect和preserve都有“使……安全”之意。defend指抵抗袭击、进攻而维护安全;guard(守卫)指守护着以维护安全， 如：guard a camp(守卫营地);protect(保护，保卫)指借助屏障、工具以使不受伤害，如：protect books by means of heavy paper cover(给书包上厚纸以保护书);preserve(保护)指使在危险中不受伤害，如：preserve a city(保护一个城市(使之完好))。
