【用法】因can仅有can，could 两种形式，而be able to 中的be则可有多种变化形式，故able 常用于须表示“能、会”而不能用can的情况。但注意：be able to 后不可用动词的被动式。

【辨异】able与capable基本同义。able语义更强，指与所需努力相当的充分能力;capable语义较弱，指满足一般需要的能力，常可指干坏事，或表示有某种可能性，接of+ing 分词(或名词)，如：be capable of better work/murder(能把工作干得更好/有可能进行谋杀)。还有competent，指胜任某工作的能力，既可接不定式，也可接for+ing 分词(或名词)，如：be competent to look after children(能胜任照看小孩)。
