prep (1) 除……之外(还有)(in addition to; as well as)：There are many others，～me. 除了我，还有好多别的人。B～us， there were 20 people at the party.除了我们以外还有20人参加了聚会。B～a mother， he has a sister to support. 除了赡养母亲外，他还有一个妹妹要抚养。What languages do you know～English? 除了英语你还懂什么语言? B～being wrong， it's also unwise.这不仅错误，而且也不明智。B～being rich， he is very clever.他不仅富有，而且很聪明。

(2) 除……之外(无) (except for; other than)(=except)(用在否定词语后)：There's no one here～me. 除了我，这儿没有任何别人。B～you， no one is qualified. 除了你，没有人合格。She has no relations～an aged aunt.除了一个上年纪的婶子外，她没有别的亲戚了。There's nothing in the refrigerator～milk. 除了牛奶，冰箱里什么也没有。〖同〗except;

adv(1)此外， 而且(also; moreover)：I don't like the food; (and)～， I'm not at all hungry.我不喜欢这食物;再说，我也根本不饿。I don't like the dress; (and)～， it's too expensive.我不喜欢这衣服;再说，也太贵了。Would these figures prove anything? And～， who keeps such statistics? 这些数字能证明什么? 况且谁来做这种统计? Her intentions were good.B～， it was pleasant to be with her.她的意图是好的。而且，与她相处令人愉快。

(2) 还，另外(in addition)：I paid the taxi driver and gave him a pound～for his help.我付给了出租汽车司机车费， 还给了他一英镑以酬谢他的帮助。I have brought a trunk and two cases and my golf-clubs～. 我带来了一口大箱子，两个提箱，还有高尔夫球杆。She has three sons and an adopted one～.他有三个儿子，还有一个养子。Every soldier was mounted and had a spare horse～. 每个士兵骑着一匹马，还牵着一匹备用的。He needed so much else～. 他还需要如此之多的其他东西。

【注意】不要把besides与beside弄混(参见BESIDE)。

【辨异】 1) besides与except都可译为“除……之外”，但含义有时不相同。besides多表示“除……之外(还有)”(即其后的宾语实为包含在内);而except 则总是表示“除……之外(无)”(即其后的宾语排除在外)，用于all，none 等词后。试对比：All of us passed besides John. (除约翰外，我们也都及格了。—— 约翰也及格了。) All of us passed except John. (除约翰外，我们都及格了。—— 约翰没及格。) 2) besides与moreover都可译为“此外，而且”，都表示对前面所说内容的补充。besides表示事后想起的随便补充，而moreover则是补充重要的，特别的或强调的内容。如：I don't like this dress. Moreover， it's too expensive. (我不喜欢这件衣服;而且，价钱太贵。)
