(1)不(in no way; to no degree) (接在助动词或情态动词等后面，简作n't/nt/)：I do～know.我不知道。I will～go. 我不去。You must～forget. 你决不能忘记。We prefer that you would～go. 我们希望你不要去。You should～be so careless.你不应该这样粗心大意。

(2)(下接非限定动词)：N～knowing what to do，he pretends～to know. 他不知道该怎么办，就假装不知道。I regret～having accepted your advice. 我后悔没听你的劝告。The doctor，～wishing to make her nervous，did not fully explain the seriousness of her condition. 大夫因为怕她紧张，没有完全讲明她的病有多严重。

(3) (用在动词believe，expect，hope，trust，think， fear， fancy，seem，appear等，副词perhaps，probably，absolutely等和词组be afraid 等后面，代表否定的从句)：Will he die? —I hope～. 他会死吗?——我希望不会。 Will it rain tomorrow?—Probably～.明天会下雨吗?——大概不会。 Will your wife come with us?—I am afraid～. 您的夫人同我们一起去吗?——恐怕不会。

(4) (用于含Are you，Can he，Shall we 等疑问句中表示否定的选择)：Are you ready or～? 你准备好没有? Can you come or～? 你能不能来? Shall we go or～? 我们走不走? I wonder whether I'll catch the last bus or～. 我不知道是否赶得上末班公共汽车。

(5) (对疑问句的部分或全部进行否定回答)：“Is it very difficult?” “N～very，but rather.”“这特别难吗?”“不是特别难，但也相当不容易。”“Do you go swimming every day?” “N～in winter.” “你每天都去游泳吗?”“冬天不去。” “Is he leaving today?” “N～today，but tomorrow.”“他今天就走吗?”“不，明天走。”

(6) (用来否定后面词或短语的意义)：N～a single person came to the party. 没有一个人来参加聚会。We are going to New York，～Washington.D.C. 我们去纽约，不去华盛顿。It was a declaration of rights，～a guarantee of rights. 它是权利的宣言，不是权利的保障。

(7) (用以表示后面词或短语的反面意思)：He has played a～unimportant part in this drama.他在这出戏中扮演了一个并非不重要的角色。The firm employs a～ excessive staff. 公司雇用的员工并非过多。He succeeded by～dishonest means. 他并非以不正当手段获得成功。

not only...(but) also不但……而且……：She～only plays the piano but sings too. 她连弹钢琴带唱歌。

not that 并不是说：N～that I love Caesar less，but that I love Rome more. 不是我不爱恺撒，但我更爱罗马。
