【辨异】amaze与surprise和astonish都表示由于意外、奇怪、不平常而引起惊异。这几个字中surprise最常用，仅表示“使人感到意外、惊讶”，如：be surprised at receiving a telegram(因收到一封电报感到惊讶);astonish表示因什么惊人的或明显无法解释的事物而大吃一惊。如：be astonished at sb's behaviour(对某人的行为大感吃惊);amaze表示使人大吃一惊到惊愕不已的程度，如：be amazed at sb's stupidity(对某人的愚蠢感到惊愕);还有一个astound，程度最强，表示使人惊讶到不知所措的地步——“震惊”。如：be astounded by a sudden calamity(被突然发生的灾难所震惊)。
