【辨异】dumb与mute都可表示“哑”或情感造成的短时间无语。dumb从前指人哑，现在则几乎完全用来指动物不能说话，如：dumb beasts of the field (地里的哑巴牲口);mute (哑的)现在比dumb更常用来指人先天的哑。还有speechless (说不出话来的)也指情感造成的短时间无语，如：left speechless by surprise (吃惊得哑口无言);voiceless (无声的)指不发声(不管是先天原因造成的，还是受伤所致)，如：Turtles are voiceless. (海龟不发声。)
