【辨异】aged与old、elderly、venerable、ancient、antique和archaic语义上都与年岁(头)有关。前四个通常指人：old(年老的)最常用，指已活了很常时间，将近暮年;aged比old的语体色彩较正式，指年龄很大，且身体衰弱;elderly(年龄很大的)指年龄在中年以上的，且成熟，现常用作old的委婉语;venerable(年老且令人尊敬的)指年老，且品格等令人肃然起敬，如：a venerable white-haired doctor(一位白发苍苍的老大夫);old(老的，旧的，过去的)还可指动物或事物，如：an old horse/car/habit(老马/旧车/旧习惯);one's old house(某人原来住的房子)。最后三个皆指事物：ancient(古代的)指存在于很久以前的，古老的，如：the ruins of an ancient building(一古建筑的废墟);用于指人时意为“非常之老的”，如：an ancient man(一个老朽);antique(古代的)指从古代流传至今因而有价值的，如：a collection of antique furniture(一套古家具);archaic(古代的;古体的)也指存在于久远的过去的，用于字词、思想时，有过时的意思，如：an archaic word(古体字)。
