(2)可以(indicating permission)：C～ I have an apple/we come in? 我可以吃个苹果/我们可以进来吗? You～take the car/have my seat.你可以用这辆车/坐我的座位。You can't smoke here.你不可以在这里抽烟。

(3)请(indicating request)：C～you wait a minute，please? 请稍候一会儿好吗? C～ you help me with this luggage? 请帮我拿一下这行李好吗?

(4)可能(indicating possibility)：Scotland～be warm in September.苏格兰9月里有可能很暖和。It can't be true.这不可能是真的。C～it be Susan? 那能是苏珊吗? What～he want ?他能想要什么呢? C～she be serious? 她会是认真的吗? What(ever)～it possibly be? 那到底能是什么呢? They can't have finished already.他们不可能已经干完了。Where～the children have gone? 孩子们能到哪儿去了呢?

(5)可以(used to make suggestions)：I～of course lend you a pound，if that will help.如果用得上的话，我当然可以借给你一英镑。We～stay here，if you like.你要是愿意，咱们可以待在这里。C～we meet again tomorrow? 我们明天再见面吗?

【说明】表示五官感觉和心里活动的动词通常不用于进行体，要表示说话此刻的行为时可与can连用。(见(1))

【辨异】1)can (could)与may (might¹)都可表示“允许”。总的来说，may 用于正式场合，口语中则更多地使用 can。在请求别人允许时，can最常用，could则表示说话者心中把握不大，如：Could I ask you something?(我可以问你一点事吗?)may 和 might 用于正式场合，含尊重对方的口吻，如：May/Might I make a suggestion?(我可以提个建议吗?)在表示对别人允许时，不用 could 和 might，只用can或may(经常用can，用may 则显得不客气，不礼貌)，如：Yes，you can borrow my bike.(可以，你可以借用我的自行车。)在转述“允许”时，用could和might，如：John asked if he could/might come in.(约翰问他可不可以进来。)She said I could/might borrow her bike.(她说我可以借用她的自行车。)2)can (could)与may (might¹)都可表示可能性，其中 can 口气最为肯定，因此表示推理上的可能性时，may、could 和 might 意为“或许”，如：The road can be blocked.(这条路是可能堵住的。)The road may/could/might be blocked.(这条路也许被堵住了。)表示现实的可能性时，can 只用于否定或疑问句(见(4));而 could、might 和may用于肯定陈述句，此时前两者比 may 口气较为不肯定，如：That may be our taxi now!(那可能是我们的出租车了。)That could/might be our taxi (but I doubt it).(那有可能/也许是我们的出租车(但我怀疑)。)3)can (could)与shall都可用来提出建议。shall用来征求对方的意见，如：Shall I drive?(要不要我开车?)Shall we go?(咱们走好吗?)而can则是说话者直接提出自己的想法(见(5));could与can相同，只是含有试探性的口吻，如：You could try pushing the car.(你可以推车试试看。)
