【辨异】broad与wide都可表示“宽广”，通常可互换，如：The river is 20 yards broad/wide. (河有20码宽。) 但wide较常用，而broad比wide较正式，常用于写景(尤其文学语言中)，如：a broad expanse of country(辽阔的乡野)。这两个字派生的名词分别为breadth和width。 当比喻意义(如：(4)(5)(6)(7)(8))时，用 broad，而不可用wide。此外，broad 还用于形容身体的各个部位，如：broad shoulders (宽肩膀)。
