言必信,行必果yán bì xìn , xíng bì guǒbe true in word and resolute in deed; be true to one’s word and firm in one’s actions; carry out one’s word to fruition; keep all one’s promises and honour all one’s pledges; promises must be kept and action must be resolute; be sincere in word and decisive in deed ❍ 今游侠,其行虽不轨于正义,然其言必信,其行必果,已诺必诚, 不爱其躯, 赴士之阸困, 即已存亡死生矣。(《史记·游侠列传》)As for the wandering knights,though their actions may not conform to perfect righteousness,yet they are always true to their word. What they undertake they invariably fulfill; What they have promised they invariably carry out. Without thinking of themselves they hasten to the side of those who are in trouble,whether it means survival or destruction,life or death. ❍ 当使若二士者,~,使言行之合,犹合符节也,无言而不行也。(《诸子集成》)75) Suppose they are sincere in word and decisive in deed so that their word and deed are made to agree like the two parts of a tally,and that there is no word but what is realized in deed,…/~。硁硁然,小人哉,抑亦可以为次矣。(《论语·子路》) They are determined to be sincere in what they say,and to carry out what they do. They are obstinate little men.
