老死不相往来lǎo sǐ bù xiāng wǎng láigrow old and die without ever visiting one another; never be in contact with each other; not visit each other all their lives
❍ 邻国相望，鸡犬之声相闻，民至～。(《老子》八十章) Though neighbouring communities overlook one another and the crowing of cocks and barking of dogs can be heard，丨Yet the people there may grow old and die without ever visiting one another.
❍ 有些人不是这样做，而是像老子说的“鸡犬之声相闻，～”，结果彼此之间就缺乏共同的语言。(《毛泽东选集》1331) Some fail to do so and,like the people described by Lao Zi“do not visit each other all their lives,though the crowing of their cocks and the barking of their dogs are within hearing of each other”.
