(2) 开头;着手(开始) (be the first to do sth or take the first step in doing sth) [I， I+prep]：Shall I～? 我开始(说)好吗?～at page 20/line 10/question 1 从第20页/第10行/第一个问题开始;～on a new novel/another bottle开始读(或写)一本新小说/喝新的一瓶;～with an apology/a story先道歉/先讲一个故事;～with this one/the National Anthem从这一个开头/先唱国歌;～by dancing/thanking sb for the invitation开始先跳舞/谢谢某人的邀请;〖同〗start，commence;〖反〗stop，cease;

(3) 起始，以……为起点 (have as a starting-point or first element) [I， I+prep]：The ocean～s here. 大洋从这里开始。Where does Asia～? 亚洲起于何处? The English alphabet～s with “A”. 英语字母表从A开始。A proper noun always～s with a capital letter.专有名词总是以大写字母开头。〖同〗start;〖反〗end;

(4) 试图(似乎)要做 (make an attempt to do sth difficult; show some likelihood of doing sth difficult) [T+to-inf， 用于neg](infml)：can't even～to assess the damage/to thank sb/to explain one's feelings 无法估计损失/不知如何感谢某人/无法解释自己的感情;

begin with 1) 首先，第一：To～with， he is too young， and secondly ...首先， 他太年轻;其次，……。 2) 一开始，最初：To～with I didn't like him， but now he's become one of my best friends. 一开始我不喜欢他，可现在他已成了我的好朋友。

【惯用法】begin (及start)后接不定式或ing分词皆可，但下列情况下多用不定式：1) begin和start用于进行体时，如：It's beginning/starting to rain. (开始下雨了。) 2)主语为事物(不是人)时，如：The ice began/started to melt.(冰开始溶化。) 3)其后的动词表示心理活动(如：understand， realize， wonder等)时，如：I began/started to realize ... (我开始意识到……) 当开始一个将持续下去的过程时，多用ing分词，如：Don't begin/start writing until I tell you. (我告诉你时你再开始写。)

【辨异】begin和start都表示“开始”，都是常用词语，区别在于start在非正式语体中比begin更常见，且强调“开始第一步”，下列情况中不可用begin，仅可用start：1) 开始行程或赛程，如：start for New York (动身前往纽约);2)开始存在，如：start a swimming club (成立游泳俱乐部);3) (使)启动，如：start an engine (开动机器)。还有commence，仅用于书面语，用以表示经过长时间周密准备之后开始，如：The trial will commence at 10a.m. (审判上午10点开始。) begin和start后可接不定式，也可接ing分词;而commence 后仅可接不定式。
