(2) 空空地，很少地 (with little furniture， equipment， etc)：His room was～furnished.他的房间里几乎没什么家具。a～furnished room几乎没什么家具的房间;

【惯用法】 1) barely(以及hardly和scarcely)表示否定意义，不可再与否定词连用;barely也不可与any，ever等非肯定词连用(hardly和scarcely则可，如：have hardly/scarcely any money 几乎没什么钱)。2) barely (以及hardly和 scarcely)可与when连用(此时主句常用倒装语序，见第(1)义的最后一例)，表示两个行为紧接着发生;但注意，when不可换为than!

【辨异】barely与hardly和scarcely都可表示“几乎(不)”的意思。hardly虽可与另外两个字互换，但强调“困难”，如：He can hardly endure the heat. (他几乎忍受不了那高热。) barely则强调“刚刚够某程度”(“仅仅”，“勉强”)，如：He barely succeeded.(他好歹算成功了。) scarcely指“非常之不……”，如：He can scarcely read. (他几乎不识字。)
