rather...than...应是……而不是……：I～deserve a promotion than he does. 得到提升的应该是我，而不是他。Choose a wife～by your ear than your eye. 选择妻子应该凭耳朵而不是凭眼睛。

rather than... 而不是(愿、要)，与其：R～than wait for the bus she took a taxi. 她没有等公共汽车，而是乘出租汽车走了。The colour seems green～than blue. 这种颜色似乎是绿的而不是蓝的。Can we do it now～than tomorrow? 我们能不能现在就干，而不要等到明天?

【注意】 当rather表示“有点，相当”时，不要与否定形式连用，如：You haven't done very (*rather) well.(你干得很不好。)

【说明】would rather是BrE，而had rather是AmE。但had rather 现在不如would rather使用广泛，而且被认为有些过时。“'d rather”相当于would/had rather。使用时两者都对。
