【辨异】 arrest与stop、cease、check、halt和pause都可表示使运动或进展停止(包括字面意义和转义两方面)。stop(停止)是通常用语，指一般意义的停止，如：stop a clock(使钟不走);cease(停止)的语体色彩较为正式，带有文学色彩，用于存在或正持续的事物，如：cease raining(停止下雨);arrest指突然地完全抑制住;check(抑制，止住)指使突然部分地或暂时地停住，如：check the enemy's advance(阻挡住敌人的前进);halt(使暂停)指使暂时停住(尤其是命令的使然)，如：halt the soldiers(命令士兵停止前进);pause(中止，停歇)指中间短暂地停歇，如：pause to take a breath(停下来喘口气)。上述动词中，arrest与check仅可用作vt，pause仅可用作vi，其他三个皆可用作vt或vi。
