(2)年龄小的(young)：one's～brother/sister 弟弟/妹妹;We met Mrs. Smith and her two～ones. 我遇到了史密斯太太和她的两个孩子。He is too～to ride a bike. 他太小，不能骑自行车。

(3)(时间、距离)短的((of time，distance)short)：Wait a～while. 请稍等一会儿。The tourists spent but a～time in Italy. 那些旅游者在意大利只待了很短的时间。only a～distance from here 离这儿只有一小段距离;Come a～way with me. 陪我走一小段路。go for a～walk 散一会儿步;〖反〗 long;

(4)不重要的，无足轻重的(not important;trivial)：a～thing 无足轻重的小事;She had a～cold last week，but she is fine now. 上星期她得了轻微的感冒，不过现在好了。Your problems seem very～. 你的问题看起来一点儿也不重要。

(5)卑鄙的，狭小的(mean;narrow)：I understand his～ways. 我了解他的卑鄙手段。people with～minds 心胸狭窄的人;

【辨异】用作形容词时，little和small都有“小”的意思，但是small只指大小，little除用来指大小外，还常置于另一形容词之后表达一些感情，如：poor little thing(可怜的小东西)，a funny little man(矮小而有趣的人)，that nasty little boy(那个讨厌的小男孩)，a pretty little cottage(一座漂亮的小别墅)。little 多作定语，并且不能“显示出程度”。它一般不与表示程度的副词，如：quite、rather、very 连用，一般不用比较级和最高级形式。在表示与他物比较而显得小的意思时，用little而不用small，如：little finger(小手指)，little hand(钟表上的小指针)。
