发愤忘食fā fèn wàng shíbe so immersed (/buried) in work as to forget one’s meals; forget one’s food in one’s eager pursuit of knowledge; work so hard as to forget to eat; work hard to the neglect of one’s meals ❍ 其为人也,~,乐以忘忧,不知老之将至云尔。(《论语·述而》) He is simply a man,who in his eager pursuit of knowledge forgets his food,who in the joy of its attainment forgets his sorrows,and who does not perceive that old age is coming on?/孔子闻之,曰:“由,尔何不对曰 ‘其为人也,学道不倦,诲人不厌,~,乐以忘忧,不知老之将至’ 云尔。” (《史记·孔子世家》1928) When Confucius heard this he said,“Why didn’t you tell him ‘He is a man who never wearies of studying the truth,never tires of teaching others,but who in his eagerness forgets his hunger and in his joy forgets his bitter lot,not worrying that old age is creeping on’?” 发愤忘食愤(奋)fā fèn wànɡ shí努力学习或工作,而忘了吃饭。比喻十分用功。be so immersed in work as to forget one’s meals, work so hard as to forget to eat |
