【辨异】 frighten与alarm、scare和terrify都表示引起恐惧，frighten以突然的，令人吃惊的方式使人震惊，但通常是短时的，特别是指意识到会对身体有伤害所产生的恐惧，例如：to frighten sb by a sudden noise(一阵突如其来的噪音使某人害怕);alarm 指认识到某些迫近的危险所产生的感觉，如：to alarm sb by a scream(尖叫一声警告某人);scare指恐吓别人使其不再泰然自若或使之失去尊严，如：to scare a child so that he cries(恐吓孩子使他哭了起来);terrify指用能够征服一切的，使人惊骇不已的恐吓来威胁某人，如：to terrify a city by lawless acts(用毫无法律约束的行为威胁城市)。
