(1)在……之中(in the midst of;surrounded by)：hide～the bushes/the mountains/the guests/the crowd 藏在灌木丛/群山/客人/人群之中;work～the elderly/the sick/the poor 在长者/病人/穷人中间工作;～a pile of books/boxes在一堆书/盒子中间;a house～the trees 树木丛中的房子;a man popular～the workers 在工人中受拥戴的人;

(2)是……其中之一(in the group of;included in)：He was (numbered)～the greatest poets/the first to come/many who needed help/those who shared my opinions/those present.他是(归为)最伟大的诗人/最先到者/众多需要帮助者/与我意见相同者/在场者之一(列)。A～his novels，this is the best.他的小说中，这是最好的一本。A～the flowers the rose is queen.万花之中玫瑰为后。A～his friends are several Spaniards.他的朋友中有几个西班牙人。

(3)在……之间(分配)(in shares or parts to each member of a group)：distribute books/share food/divide one's property fairly～the people在那些人们之间公平地分发书/分配食物/分财产;The estate/money was divided～his brothers.地产/ 钱在他的兄弟们之间进行了分割。

(4)互相，彼此，一起　(through the combined action towards each other by members of a group)：argue/quarrel/discuss sth/talk about sth～themselves 他们互相辩论/争吵/讨论某事/谈论某事;settle sth～themselves共同解决某事;They cannot agree～themselves.他们无法取得一致意见。They could not raise/collect five pounds～them.他们一块凑不起五英镑。decide～themselves where they should go first共同决定先去哪里;

【用法】among和amongst 意义上没什么区别，都接复数名词或复数意义的单数名词(如 people);过去有人认为在元音字母开头的词前用amongst，在辅音字母开头的字前用among;现在关键在于句子的节奏。其实口语中amongst更常见。

【辨异】among和between都可以表示 “在……之间”，通常认为：among指三个以上人或物之间，而between则指两者之间;然而，现在between也可指三者以上，此时是从这多个人或物个体间的相互关系角度而考虑的，如：a contract between five companies(五家公司间的合同);而among则是将它们作为一个整体而考虑的，如：among the crowd(在人群之中);amid(st) 也是“在……之间”的意思，但指的是在一个中心位置，被包围着，是一个文学色彩较重的词，如：amid(st) the ruins(在废墟之中)。
